  Unrestrained Poetry on Rice Paper

Notes on the landscape paintings by Wu Yiping

Born in 1944, Wu Yiping is a Chinese painter and has assumed a wide range of titles notably, a researcher and secretary general of the Shanghai Art Style Research Institute of Jiaotong University, a landscape painter for the China Federation of Literature and Arts, and Vice Chairman of the China Calligraphy and Painters Association.

There’s a familiar saying that says a painting suggests the personality of the artist who created it, but that is not exactly the case with Wu Yiping.

Slender with thin facial features and soft spoken, Wu Yiping is known for his modesty and good temper. You might imagine that his works of art would show a delicate and fluid style, just like creations from scholars in southern China. But a glimpse of his paintings suggest otherwise: bold with cascading touches that are so powerful that they remind you of the poetry from the classical poem, “East Flows the Mighty River”

Very few of Wu Yiping’s paintings are rendered in small formats, most are presented on an immense scale so that he can wield his paint brush to his heart’s content. The large scale pieces are compounded with the preference of blazing red and green colors. The sweeping touches and unrestrained use of paint evoke the presence of towering mountains and angry waves. The breath-taking visual effects are far from tender or delicate. One is tempted to drop one’s jaw in awe. Although his name “Yiping” literally means “uniformly smooth and flat”, his style is just the opposite!

Wu Yiping has been drawing landscape paintings for years and with diligence. Since graduating from an art academy, he has focused on blazing his own trail. He is perfectly aware that traditional landscape paintings are a fitting media of artistic expressions, but for generations, artists have been recycling the stereotypes and have introduced nothing new. They are far from the spirit of the contemporary era, all while the well-worn techniques are not meeting the needs of modern tastes. He believes that the rendition of Nature should not be limited to ancient skills and it is a natural choice for artists to make new changes, either big or small. An artist should not limit the expression of his talent in the realm of old techniques. A new era requires us to depict the brilliant world with new visual idioms, and rendering them in a small scale only barely conveys the heart-pounding spirit that he demands. So Wu Yiping breaks new ground in scale first: an expansive space allows him to give free rein to his skills. With the benefit of the splashing paint technique, he is able to bring out the internal spirit of the subjects, while his dazzling colors and rigid lines add to an awe-inspiring effect.

Wu Yiping has traveled extensively and has been to a myriad of places, but the most inspiring of them were his ten visits to Mount Taihang, a natural wonder that stretches for tens of miles and prompted many poets to celebrate it with timeless inspired work. The wonderful mountain landscape of Taihang is a living incarnation of the undying commitment of the nation that has left Wu Yiping in awe. He found that the gorgeous scenery interprets the mood in him and has proclaimed: “The essence of painting is right here!”

Inspired by the unusual surroundings and indulging in the perfect mood, he was able to depict magnificent vistas, and all the rocks with their rigid forms reveal his mood. At the utmost peak, he was able to command panoramic views of the mountain, streams, clouds and smoke. Sometimes the subjects are shrouded in a mist and are not clearly recognizable, yet the mix of colors and ink is still amazing. The vigor of Taihang gave free rein to his imagination and gave him courage, and elevated his art to a new height. You can tell from his paintings that he was salivating over the sight and uttering his feelings.

Wu Yiping is a man of diligence; he pays attention to the control of his brush strokes and technique. He has painstakingly studied past masters, the extravagant scenes that Dong yuan and Ju Ran have depicted and the vibrant vistas that Ma Yuan and Xia Gui have rendered proved to be inspirational to him. He taps into the wealth of fine traditions and lends a noble touch to his own creation. On the other hand, he has also learned the virtues of Western paintings and has absorbed valuable elements in expressionism and impressionism. Masterpieces in modern China have also inspired him to take new steps in art.

In addition, Wu Yiping is also an ardent advocate of the development of fine arts. Early in the 1960s, he set up various art training courses to foster fellow artists and has created many opportunities for them. Such efforts reflect his talent as a capable organizer. He knows where he is heading and he keeps going steadfastly forward, showing a spirit of persistence as a tough survivor of setbacks. From these qualities, the old saying that links one’s painting with one’s personality serves Wu Yiping perfectly.
